How To Install DNSCrypt on Ubuntu 16.10

Monday, October 24, 2016

Installing DNSCrypt is easier now on Ubuntu 16.10 than other previous versions. So easy you don't have to do any weird configuration that makes you awake all night.

First, install dnscrypt-proxy using apt.

$ sudo apt install dnscrypt-proxy

Second thing you have to do is find a reliable resolver name. You can find the list on /usr/share/dnscrypt-proxy/dnscrypt-resolvers.csv. Use LibreOffice Calc to view this file. Open and edit DNSCRYPT_PROXY_RESOLVER_NAME found on /etc/default/dnscrypt-proxy and change it to another resolver name.

$ sudo vi /etc/default/dnscrypt-proxy

Save this file and restart the service.

$ sudo service dnscrypt-proxy restart

And last thing, point your DNS to 127.0.2.1.
